LIFE BEFORE HAWAI'I
Cardiologist James E. Muto, M.D., F.A.C.C., was born to serve a purpose, and serve he has. Dr. Muto attended the University of California, Davis, where he graduated in 1982, going on to UC San Francisco Medical School and graduating in 1987. Dr. Muto met his future wife Robin while attending UC Davis, where Robin says they met in the lunch cafeteria in 1982. The two fell in love with each other, and spent time water-skiing, watching movies, enjoying dinners, and falling into the joy of life, all while preparing and studying for a life in medicine.
Robin Muto studied Animal Science at the University of California, Davis, and was a freshman at the time she met James. Following Dr. Muto's Internal Medicine residence at UC San Francisco in 1990, the couple married. Wherever they were called to serve in medicine they traveled, settling into a practice in Flordia in 1992.
Three years later Robin found herself idealizing a sunny, perfect temperature all your round and found Maui, Hawai'i. They both fell in love with Maui, not just for the best weather on the planet, but also its rich native legends and spirits that have hand-crafted a community of people who cherish and honor life, which is right in line with their beliefs.
ESTABLISHMENT OF MAUI CARDIOLOGY
In 1995 the Muto’s moved to Maui and opened their practice known as, Maui Cardiology Ltd. Shortly after arriving on Maui in 1995, Robin got pregnant with their first son Alexander, after many years of trying. This was an extraordinary blessing for an extraordinary couple, and they continue to share the same sacred gift of Aloha. Three years after their first son was conceived, their second son Nathaniel was born, and both are as divinely inspired as their parents, and they care deeply for one another.
CREATION OF NON-PROFIT: IGNITE A LIFE
Alexander has since became an inspirational spearhead. From that first breath of inspiration he drew at the age of 16 from a leadership conference he attended in California, Alexander and his family have created a corporation for youth poignantly named, Ignite a Life, which is a non-profit that takes children in their Hawai’i Leaders Core program internationally, to attend conferences featuring world renowned speakers teaching invaluable life skills. Ignite a Life then created it’s signature resident conference the Alaka’i Youth Leadership Conference host in Maui in 2018. Now Ignite a Life is heading towards a new direction to solve the problem of Hawai’i being short 800 Physicians with they new program Hawai’i Youth to Medicine. The organization bring an incredible opportunity for our youth to succeed in purpose with intent, regardless of economic status.
Alexander has now graduated with a BA in Communication from the University of California Santa Barbara, and has decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and continue the legacy of Maui Cardiology’s spirit on Maui by going back to study to become a physician and take over the family practice. He has decided to plant himself back into his roots to study at Hawaii Pacific University on Oahu.
Nathaniel is another prodigy of the Muto’s. Currently studying at the University of Maryland and majoring in Mechanical Engineering and is considering the same path as his brother to also support in taking continuing the legacy of Maui Cardiology and becoming a physician like his father before him. Nathaniel, like his brother, draws inspiration from his passions and turning his dreams into reality.
THEIR GIVING SPIRIT TO THE ISLAND
The Muto’s are a family driven by purpose. They care for and nurture the very soul of what life is all about. Robin is wonderfully funny and is the backbone of the clinical administrative structure of their practice. Dr. Muto, the cardiologist, or, the ‘physician of the heart, looks after most of Maui and the outer island, and many know Dr. Muto by his signature forest green scrubs. Their bright and wonderful sons are the extension of two incredibly spirited people. When Robin is not managing the administration of the practice she is traveling with her son to Hāna, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi and other neighboring islands, offering outreach and education for the non-profit ignitealife.org.
